Recently we had a chance to interview LeVar Burton . At 19,He played Kunta Kinte in Roots as his first major acting role while still a student at USC. As the 25 th anniversary rolls around, a few retrospective specials are being done to commemorate the event which touched all of America when it aired over the period of eight consecutive days in 1977. Before the days of the VCR, Americans watched the series together, all at the same time and today its impact is still being recounted. He told of the strength and personal commitment it took to put himself in the place of young Kunta Kinte and everything he and his people endured, from their capture , torture and enslavement. It was a truly emotional and moving experience for all of us as he recounted the story written by Alex Haley and his participation in it, tears welling in his eyes. Before the interview, everyone was upbeat, conversational, discussing the new Star Trek series, gossipping about the past series, but afterwards the mood remained somber, quiet with everyone remaining very introspective. Look for his new commentary 25 years later on the Roots DVD.

Well, the 2001 Oscars have come and gone but we still have all the pictures to remember who had the best taxidermist fashion designer. And those who didn't, like this girl. I don't want to name any names, but she came out the Golden Girl of the evening. And she's single now. Good luck guys. Here are a few images from the Vanity Fair Oscar Party at Morton's in West Hollywood.

March 5, 2001 another tragic shooting took place at a high school in Southern California near San Diego. Here are some images from the week we were there.

I would like to know If you have any info. on putting news logos on unmarked news units, Our station is changing our logo and our promtions dept. wants to put logos on all our unmarked news units to "get the new logo out there" Most of our photog's think this a dangerous idea and don't want it. I am trying to gather as much info. on this subject to show them what other stations have been through both good and/or bad. Pehaps you could send me any articles or perhaps put up some type of message on a message board to let others write in on the topic if possible. Thank you

What's your opinion?

Here's what one visitor had to say.

It is my opinion that you should maintain at least two vehicles that are
unmarked. These are useful for investigative pieces. Additionally they
are useful in situations where neighborhoods are hostile to the news
media.

Asside from that, marked units are an asset with name recognition. If
somebody drives by a crime scene and sees your logo on a news unit, they
may watch your channel that night to see what happened.

During the riots in Cincinnati, news people and vehicles seemed to be
unofficially off limits to the hostilities. I guess the protestors /
looters felt we were their messenger and didn't want to scare us away.

Ed. Note: How curteous of them. Apparently, our rioters here in LA lack such sensitivities,
