Students to help w/coverage of Demo. Nat'l. Conv. in L.A.
The world's largest news organization is looking for journalism students to help cover the Democratic National
Convention at Staples Center in Los Angeles this August. The print, photo, radio and video divisions of The Associated Press need energetic and enthusiastic students for a variety of support tasks, including drivers, runners, photo assistants, receptionists, transcribers and office clerks. Most of the roughly 40 jobs will run from about August 13 - August 18, 2000 for up to 12 hours a day, with both day and night shifts. A few positions will start sooner - some as early as July 27, 2000. The pay will vary between about $10 and $15 an hour, depending on the job. But the real reward will be an opportunity to work with the world's best journalists in covering a major news event. The Northern Virginia Daily, a six-day-a-week AM paper in the Shenandoah
Valley, that has been the most honored small daily in the state for the past
decade is in need of a headline writer/page designer, reporter, city editor and
full-time photographer for expanding editorial staff. Copy desk edits stories, but
page designers write cutlines and headlines and proof pages, so superior
command of the language a must. We are fully paginated on PowerMacs.
Rotating work on local, state, national, international and business pages.
Knowledge of QuarkXPress a prerequisite. May/June graduates considered.
Reporter position is general assignment with concentration on hard news. Daily
experience preferred, but not required. City editor would help edit copy and

FEATURES PICTURE EDITOR: This person is responsible for
the photos in all features sections and business tabs and is represents
the photo department in all features matters. This person attends
meetings each week and works with the section editors,
reporters,page designers and copy desk to help determine which
stories we cover photographically, how we cover them and how we
display the images in the newspaper.
 
The editor closely supervises two photographers assigned to features,
in addition to working with a shooting staff of 16 and a lab staff of
five. Duties include assigning, editing film, planning coverage and
ensuring good and proper picture use in the paper. The job also
requires working with photo archives, both on-line and in-house, as
well as coordinating freelancers.
 
We're looking for someone with a strong photographic background
and experience working in a true team setting. The position involves
being able to handle numerous tasks at a time. It's also very important
that this editor have excellent interpersonal skills to work well with
any number of people throughout the Free Press.
 
The schedule is a 37.5-hour work week and is predominantly 10 a.m.
to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Seeking editors to be primarily responsible for coordinating with the News Department in the production of daily online newspaper pages including related photos, graphics and supplemental material from the Internet and other sources. Also responsible for helping to develop and produce non-newspaper information content online and for updating and maintaining existing non-newspaper pages. Newsroom experience, preferably as a copy or news desk editor, is required
as well as knowledge of the internet anf HTML and the ability to learn command functions on related systems and software.
